Chain Rule

Chain Rule

Postby Gymtastic07 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 6:46 pm

How do I know when I need to apply the chain rule more than once? I am familiar and comfortable with the chain rule being applied once but I always get confused because I don't know when to apply it more than once!

Hi,

Sorry this response is so late, I hope that you figured out how to apply the chain rule more than once by now. When your taking a derivative you need to apply the chain rule anytime you have a "function inside another function" For instance, applying the chain rule once:

Here we multiplied by the derivative of the inside, but what if the derivative of the inside required its own chain rule, thats when you need to apply the chain rule again:

Here we multiplied by the derivative of the inside of sin, but the derivative of the inside require its own chain rule. Hope that helps!
Give Love.
